San Agustinillo travel guide
What San Agustinillo is like
San Agustinillo is the smallest and calmest of the three beach villages strung along this coast. It is basically one road behind a curved bay, with fishing boats pulled up on the sand, a handful of seafood restaurants and guesthouses that range from simple rooms to stylish places on the cliffs. There is no real nightlife; evenings are for dinner by the water and an early night.
It suits couples, families and anyone who wants Mazunte's setting with fewer people, and who is happy to take a short ride to Zipolite or Mazunte when they want more going on.
What to do in San Agustinillo
The bay is the reason to come. On calm days it is one of the more sheltered places on this coast for a swim, and the small waves draw bodyboarders and beginner surfers; boards are usually easy to rent on the beach. The sea still changes with the swell, so check the flags and swim near other people.
Local fishermen offer boat trips from the beach to look for sea turtles, dolphins and, roughly from December to March, humpback whales, depending on the season and the sea. You can walk to Mazunte for the Mexican Turtle Center and the sunset at Punta Cometa, or take a taxi to Zipolite for an evening out. The mangroves of La Ventanilla are a short drive west.
When to go
The dry season, roughly November to May, has the most reliable sunshine and usually the calmest water in the bay. The rainy season, roughly June to October, brings afternoon storms, lush hills and lower prices; September and October tend to be the wettest. Because the village is so small, rooms run out quickly around Christmas, New Year and Easter week, so book well ahead for those dates.
Practical tips
Three nights to a week is a good stay, using the village as a quiet base for the rest of the coast. Bring cash, as ATMs nearby are few and not always working and many places do not accept cards; the nearest banks are in Pochutla. There is little shopping in the village itself, so stock up on anything specific before you arrive. Guesthouses right on the beach are the most convenient; those on the hills have the best views but more steps.
With a private transfer you go straight from Puerto Escondido, or from its airport with your flight number in the booking, to your guesthouse in about 1 h 15 min. If you want a short stop on the way for cash or groceries, ask us on WhatsApp.
