Puerto Ángel travel guide
What Puerto Ángel is like
Puerto Ángel is a real working town rather than a beach resort. Fishing boats unload in the bay, the navy has a post here, and daily life revolves around the pier, the market stalls and the seafood restaurants along the waterfront. Historically it was a small port for the region's coffee; today most visitors come for its calm water and its unhurried, local feel.
It suits travelers who prefer a Mexican town to a backpacker scene, divers and snorkelers, and anyone who wants Zipolite's nightlife a few minutes away without sleeping next to it. Families like it for the gentler coves.
What to do in Puerto Ángel
The bay has two main beaches: the town beach by the pier, where the fishing boats work, and Playa del Panteón on the western side, a small cove that on calm days is good for swimming and snorkeling around the rocks. Just east of town, Estacahuite is a set of small coves with clear water and rocks to explore with a mask. As anywhere on this coast, conditions change with the swell, so check the sea before you go in.
From the pier, local boatmen offer snorkeling, fishing trips and outings along the coast to look for dolphins, turtles and, in winter, humpback whales. Eat fresh fish on the waterfront, then take a taxi to Zipolite for the sunset or to Mazunte for Punta Cometa and the turtle center.
When to go
The dry season, roughly November to May, is the best time for clear water and snorkeling. From roughly June to October the rainy season brings afternoon storms, greener hills and sometimes murkier water after heavy rain; September and October are usually the wettest months. Christmas, New Year and especially Easter week bring many Mexican families to the beaches, so book ahead for those dates.
Practical tips
Two to four days is enough for the town itself, more if you use it as a base for the coast. Puerto Ángel has more everyday services than the beach villages, and Pochutla, about 15 minutes inland, has banks, a large market and the regional bus station, which makes it easy to stock up. Bring cash for small restaurants and boat trips. Hotels on the hills have views but steep streets; those near the water are easier with luggage.
Puerto Ángel is about 1 h 25 min from Puerto Escondido by private transfer. Add your flight number when you book and the driver will meet you at Puerto Escondido airport and drive you straight here. For a stop in Pochutla on the way, ask us on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions
Is Puerto Ángel a good place for snorkeling?
It is one of the better spots on this coast. The coves around the bay are more sheltered than the open beaches, and on calm days with clear water you can see fish around the rocks. Visibility depends on the sea and the season.
Is Puerto Ángel the same as Puerto Angelito?
No. Puerto Angelito is a small beach inside Puerto Escondido. Puerto Ángel is a separate town about 75 km east, past Mazunte and Zipolite.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is per vehicle and covers up to 4 passengers with their luggage.
Will I share the vehicle with other travelers?
Never. Every transfer is private: the vehicle is only for you and your group.
How far in advance should I book?
At least 24 hours ahead, especially for airport pickups and long routes. For a last-minute ride, message us on WhatsApp and we will do our best.
What if my flight is delayed?
Add your flight number when you book. Your driver follows the flight and waits for you.
