Mazunte, Zipolite and around: which village suits you
Four villages, four moods
East of Puerto Escondido, past Pochutla, a short stretch of coast holds four small beach villages a few minutes apart. They share the same coastline and the same slow pace, but each one draws a different crowd, so picking the right base makes a real difference to your stay.
Puerto Ángel is a working fishing port on a sheltered bay, popular with Mexican families and the least touristy of the four. Zipolite is a long open beach with a free-spirited, clothing-optional reputation, guesthouses, bars and the liveliest evenings. San Agustinillo is a single small bay with a handful of hotels and restaurants, the quietest choice. Mazunte, a Pueblo Mágico, mixes yoga, cafés, craft stalls and the sunset walk to Punta Cometa.
Beaches, swimming and nature
The sea here changes from one beach to the next. Zipolite has strong waves and rip currents, and every season swimmers get into trouble there: stay in your depth, watch where locals swim and keep out when the red flag is up. San Agustinillo, parts of Mazunte bay and the coves around Puerto Ángel are usually calmer, though conditions vary with the swell.
Mazunte is home to the Mexican Turtle Center, a reminder that sea turtles nest on these beaches. Local boat trips go out to look for turtles and dolphins, and in winter, roughly December to March, humpback whales pass along the coast. Just west of Mazunte, La Ventanilla offers community-run boat rides through a mangrove lagoon with crocodiles and birds.
When to go
The dry season, roughly November to May, has the most reliable weather and the most visitors. Christmas, New Year and Easter week are the busiest of all, with full guesthouses and higher prices, so book early if your dates fall then. Some long weekends also bring crowds from Oaxaca and other cities.
From June to October it rains more, usually in afternoon or night storms, and the hills turn green. It is quieter and cheaper, but some small places close for a few weeks, the sea can be rougher and dirt roads to hillside hotels get muddy.
Practical tips
Most people stay at least three or four nights, and many longer. Choose Zipolite for nightlife, Mazunte for yoga and a village feel, San Agustinillo for calm and swimming, Puerto Ángel for a local fishing-town atmosphere. Wherever you stay, bring enough cash: ATMs are few and can run out, and many small places do not take cards, so it is easier to withdraw in Puerto Escondido or Pochutla.
Between villages you can walk along the beach, take a colectivo pickup or a local taxi. The transfer price covers any address in Mazunte, Zipolite, San Agustinillo and Puerto Ángel, including hotels up steep hillside roads; give us the exact name of your hotel when you book. Flying into Huatulco? These villages lie between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, so write to us on WhatsApp for a direct ride to the villages.
