San José del Pacífico travel guide
What San José del Pacífico is like
San José del Pacífico is a small village strung along the highway between Oaxaca City and the coast, at around 2,400 m in the pine forests of the Sierra Sur. On clear mornings you look down on a sea of clouds; in the afternoon, fog often drifts in through the trees. Wooden cabins, wood stoves and simple cafés set the tone.
It suits travelers looking for quiet, cool air, walks and a break from the heat of the coast. Life is calm and basic, and evenings are more about a fire and a view than nightlife.
What to do in San José del Pacífico
Walk the forest trails and dirt roads around the village to viewpoints over the mountains, or hire a local guide for longer hikes to nearby communities. Many cabins and small wellness centres offer a temazcal, the traditional steam bath, which feels especially good on a cold evening.
Watch the sunset over the clouds from one of the viewpoints, eat hearty mountain food such as soups, quesadillas and tamales, and drink coffee grown on the slopes below. On the drive up from the coast you pass coffee farms and small villages, good places for a short stop.
When to go
The dry season, roughly November to May, brings the clearest skies and the best chance of a sea of clouds at dawn, but also the coldest nights: from December to February temperatures can drop close to freezing. From about June to October rain and fog are frequent, the forest is at its greenest and the road can be slower.
Weekends and Mexican holidays such as Easter week and the end of the year bring more visitors from Oaxaca City and the coast, so book your cabin ahead for those dates.
Practical tips
One or two nights is enough for most people. Bring warm clothes, a rain jacket and good shoes whatever the season. Do not count on finding a working ATM: bring enough cash for lodging, food and activities. Cabins are scattered along the highway and on the slopes around it, and the village centre is small and walkable.
A private transfer handles the winding road from Puerto Escondido at your pace, with stops if anyone gets carsick. San José also works well as a stopover between the coast and Oaxaca City, splitting the journey into two shorter drives.
