If your destination is Puerto Escondido, you have two airports to choose from: Puerto Escondido's own (PXM), a few minutes from town, and Bahías de Huatulco International (HUX), about 110 km down the coast. Booking sites often show both, and the cheaper or more convenient flight is not always the same one. This guide helps you decide, without pretending there is one answer for everybody.
The short answer
Fly into Puerto Escondido (PXM) if the schedule and fare are close, because you skip a long drive. Fly into Huatulco (HUX) if it saves you a connection, a night in Mexico City or a clear amount of money, and you are happy to add about 1 h 45 min of road. The extra drive is the real cost of Huatulco, so weigh it against what you save in the air.
Puerto Escondido airport (PXM)
PXM is a small single-terminal airport on the northwest edge of town, right off Highway 200. Most traffic is domestic, and many travelers connect through Mexico City, so you usually clear immigration at your first Mexican airport and simply collect your bags here.
The good: from the terminal, most of town is 10 to 20 minutes away. You land, walk out and are at your accommodation shortly after, which matters after a long day of travel and especially at night.
The trade-offs: fewer flights, so fewer choices of dates and times, and fares can be higher on some days. Schedules change by season and airline, so check what actually operates on your dates rather than relying on what you remember from last year.
Huatulco airport (HUX)
HUX is the main gateway to the central Oaxacan coast. It usually has more flights, including seasonal ones from the United States and Canada, and some domestic fares are lower than into Puerto Escondido. The terminal is small and easy to navigate, and it sits close to Highway 200.
The good: more options, sometimes a direct flight where PXM would need a connection, and a useful base if you also want to visit Huatulco's bays, Mazunte or Zipolite.
The trade-offs: the road to Puerto Escondido is roughly 110 km and takes about 1 h 45 min. It is a two-lane highway with curves and speed bumps in every village, and afternoon storms can slow it down from roughly June to October.
How to compare the real cost
Do not compare only the ticket. Add up:
- The fare itself, for the dates you can actually travel.
- The ground transport. A private transfer from Puerto Escondido airport is $800 MXN per vehicle, one way. From Huatulco airport it is $3,000 MXN per vehicle, one way, both for up to 4 passengers booked online.
- Your time. About 1 h 45 min of extra road with Huatulco, plus the wait for luggage.
- A possible extra connection or hotel night if the cheaper route forces you to overnight somewhere.
For one person, the ground cost difference can outweigh a small fare saving. For three or four people sharing a vehicle, the transfer cost per person drops a lot, so Huatulco becomes easier to justify. Only compare fares on a booking site for your exact dates; we do not quote flight prices because they change constantly.
When Puerto Escondido (PXM) is the better choice
- You arrive in the evening or at night and want to be in bed quickly.
- You travel with small kids, surfboards or a lot of luggage.
- The fare and schedule are similar to the Huatulco option.
- You only plan to stay in Puerto Escondido and Zicatela.
When Huatulco (HUX) is the better choice
- It saves you a connection or a hotel night on the way.
- The fare difference is large enough to pay for the ground transport and your time.
- You are combining Huatulco, Mazunte or Zipolite with Puerto Escondido, so you will be on the road anyway.
- You are travelling in a group of three or four, which spreads the transfer cost.
Practical tips
- Landing in Huatulco late? A prebooked driver tracks your flight, so a delay costs you nothing, and you avoid improvising a 110 km ride at night.
- Keep some Mexican pesos in cash. Many small places on the coast do not take cards.
- For the flight home from Huatulco, leave Puerto Escondido at least 3 h 30 min before take-off, a little more around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
- You can fly into one airport and out of the other if that gives you better times. The transfer works in either direction.
