How to get from Huatulco airport to Puerto Escondido: every option compared

Many international flights land in Huatulco (HUX), not in Puerto Escondido, so a lot of travelers end up asking the same question after booking: how do I get from Huatulco airport to Puerto Escondido? The distance is roughly 110 km along Highway 200 and the drive takes about 1 h 45 min, depending on traffic and road works. There are several ways to do it. None is the best for everybody, so here is an honest comparison.

The route in short

From the airport you join Highway 200 heading west. The road climbs through low hills to Pochutla, the market town where the roads to Puerto Ángel, Zipolite and Mazunte split off, then continues through villages, river crossings and dry coastal forest until Puerto Escondido. It is a two-lane road with curves and speed bumps (topes) in every village, which is why the trip takes longer than 110 km suggests. In the rainy season, from roughly June to October, afternoon storms can slow things down further.

Option 1: private transfer

A driver waits for you at arrivals with your name on a sign, tracks your flight (so a delay costs you nothing), helps with luggage and drives you straight to your door. There are no stops to collect other passengers and no schedule to match.

On this site the price is $3,000 MXN per vehicle, one way, for up to 4 passengers, booked online with your flight number. For two people that is a lot more than a seat in a shared vehicle, but for three or four people it works out far closer, and you keep the privacy and the direct drive. For groups of more than four or a last-minute arrival, write to us on WhatsApp.

Best for: late or night arrivals, families, groups of three or four, anyone carrying surfboards or lots of luggage, and anyone who does not want to improvise after a long flight.

Option 2: rental car

Renting at the airport gives you freedom to stop and explore, and it can make sense if you plan to tour the coast for several days. Keep in mind that Highway 200 is not an easy road to drive tired: curves, topes, slow trucks and occasional animals on the road. Driving at night is the part most people regret. Also check the rental company's conditions on insurance, deposits and drop-off in another town, since returning the car in Puerto Escondido may carry a fee. Parking in the center of Puerto Escondido can be tight.

Best for: confident drivers who will keep the car for the whole stay, and who land in daylight.

Option 3: shared van (colectivo)

Shared shuttles and colectivos run between Huatulco and the coast and can cost less per person. The trade-offs are the same everywhere: they usually leave when they fill up or at set times, may stop to pick up or drop off other passengers, and may drop you at a central point rather than your hotel. Fares, schedules and operators change, so confirm the price, the departure time and the drop-off point directly before you rely on one, and do not assume one will be waiting when a late flight lands.

Best for: solo travelers on a tight budget with flexible timing and light luggage.

Option 4: airport taxi

Taxis at the airport are the simplest on-the-spot choice, but a 110 km ride is a long-distance fare and prices are usually agreed in advance rather than metered. Ask for the full price before getting in, confirm it is for the whole vehicle, and make sure the driver agrees to go all the way to Puerto Escondido. It is worth comparing that quote with a prebooked transfer, which has a fixed price and a driver already waiting.

Best for: travelers who did not book anything and are comfortable negotiating.

Option 5: public bus

The cheapest way is to go by road in stages, usually by getting to a bus station and taking a regional bus along the coast, sometimes with a change in Pochutla. It is slow, the airport is not in town, and you will need to get to the bus station first, with your luggage and in the heat. Timetables and fares vary and change, so check them locally. Buses are not a good fit for night arrivals.

Best for: backpackers with plenty of time and little luggage.

Another option: fly into Puerto Escondido instead

Puerto Escondido has its own airport (PXM). Flights there are fewer and, depending on the dates, sometimes more expensive, but landing there removes the 1 h 45 min drive entirely. The airport is close to town, and a transfer from it is much shorter: see the Puerto Escondido airport transfer if you go that way. Compare total cost and time before deciding, including the drive you save.

Which one should you choose?

  • Arriving at night, or after a long international trip: private transfer.
  • Three or four travelers: private transfer, because the cost per person drops.
  • Surfboards, kids or lots of luggage: private transfer.
  • Touring the coast for days and happy to drive: rental car, picked up in daylight.
  • Solo, flexible and on a tight budget: colectivo or bus, after checking times locally.

Practical tips

  • Bring some Mexican pesos in cash. Many small shops and restaurants on the coast do not take cards.
  • On international flights, keep your passport, return details and the address of your first night at hand for immigration.
  • Going back to Huatulco for a flight? Leave Puerto Escondido at least 3 h 30 min before take-off, a little more around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
  • If you want a quick stop for water, a bathroom or cash on the way, tell your driver.
