What Agua Blanca is like

Agua Blanca is a small coastal community west of Puerto Escondido, a little past Roca Blanca. Its beach is broken up by rock formations, and when the tide goes out they hold natural pools of seawater. Around them you will find a few guesthouses, family-run palapa restaurants and not much else.

That is the appeal: no nightlife, no big hotels, just the sea, the rocks and a slow daily rhythm. It suits travelers who want to read in a hammock, eat fresh fish and go to bed early, and families looking for somewhere quiet near Puerto Escondido.

What to do there

The rock pools are the main attraction: at low tide you can soak in them and look for small fish and crabs. Check the tide times and go when the water is low and the sea is calm, because waves can wash over the rocks without warning, and the rocks themselves are slippery. Water shoes help.

The open beach has strong waves and currents at times, so ask locally before swimming. Otherwise, the days are for walking the shore, watching pelicans and fishing boats, and long lunches. Roca Blanca and the Manialtepec lagoon, with its mangrove boat trips, are easy outings along the way, and the Chacahua lagoons are further west.

When to go

The dry season, roughly November to May, is the best time: sunny days, calmer seas on many days and clearer water in the pools. Easter week and the Christmas holidays bring Mexican families, and weekends at those times can be busy at the palapas.

From June to October afternoon or evening storms are common, the landscape turns green and swells are often bigger, which can make the pools rougher. In the second half of the year sea turtles nest on beaches along this coast; if you see a nest or hatchlings, keep your distance and avoid lights on the sand.

Practical tips

Two to four nights is a comfortable stay. Bring cash from Puerto Escondido, since there are few or no ATMs nearby and small businesses rarely take cards. Shops are basic, so pack sunscreen, insect repellent and anything you cannot do without.

Accommodation is in small guesthouses and cabins close to the beach; book ahead in high season, as there are not many rooms. Public transport is limited to colectivos on the highway, which makes a private transfer the simplest way in and out. Give us the name of your guesthouse when you book, and write to us on WhatsApp if you want to come straight from the airport or carry on to another destination.
